Raw Milk Herd Shares
RAW milk is illegal to be sold for human consumption from farmer to consumer in the state of Indiana. You can obtain RAW milk either by purchasing a herd-share (click here), from which you are entitled to a percentage share of the herd’s RAW milk, or purchase RAW milk for your pets with the “Pet Food” label (click here).
RAW Milk Information
RAW milk is unprocessed milk, meaning it is milk that has neither been pasteurized nor homogenized.
After pasteurization, bacteria found naturally in milk are killed. During the high temperature heating process, cell bodies of these bacteria are ruptured and their contents are spilled, releasing intracellular proteins. This causes many milk drinkers to suffer histamine or allergic reactions. Almost all of these same consumers can drink raw milk and not have allergies. The high levels of bacteria permitted in milk intended for pasteurization are still found in pasteurized milk; they are just dead and not removed by the process.
Homogenization is the process of destroying the natural butter fat cells found in raw natural milk. This process uses extreme pressure to break apart the soft buoyant fat cells, which causes the remaining small fat pieces to blend into milk and no longer float to the top making the cream line. Some European countries have studies that show that this process is dangerous and may strongly contribute to heart disease and arterial plaguing. Our FDA disputes these findings under pressure from the strong dairy lobby. Homogenization is not a required step, but rather a step of convenience to deny the consumer the ability to see how much cream is actually in the milk they buy.
Milk is a hot topic in the news and will only continue to be as more and more people become aware of the conditions of the dairies from where their milk comes. It is important to make an informed choice. Spend some time and do your research. What you choose to eat and drink should be given at least as much thought as any other important decision in your life. Your health depends on it.

Herd Shares
A herd share agreement is a contract between a farmer and customer that allows the customer to “buy” a share or portion of an animal. It is illegal in the state of Indiana to sell RAW milk for human consumption. The legal way for a person who desires to attain and consume RAW milk is for them to purchase a cow and get the milk from the cow. Most people however are not interested in housing and feeding a cow, let alone able to consume the entire milk production from a cow. With a herd-share program families come together and share in the ownership interest of a dairy herd. Per a legal contract the families are then permitted to consume the milk from the dairy herd in a proportion equal to that of their ownership interest (shares owned). The owners of these herd share(s) enlist the services of a professional dairy farmer to care for their herd, milk the cows, and prepare the RAW milk production to be accepted by the herd-share owners. Shareholders pay a monthly boarding fee and pick up their milk once a week or as scheduled to be convenient for both the farmer and the shareholder.
How do I get started?
In order to be an owner in the herd-share program you will need to contact Pasture’s Delights by phone or email. We will provide more information including the contracts for your review.
If you are comfortable with the terms of the boarding agreement then return the signed agreements along with the initial investment amount based on the shares purchased. This initial investment is your purchase price into the dairy herd. You now have ownership interest in the cows. We will then schedule a time to meet you at the farm for a tour, show you the cows, and walk you through the milk pick-up process.
The ongoing costs of the program are the flat rate boarding fees that are paid at the beginning of each month. This is the remuneration to Pasture’s Delights for our services in taking care of your share of the herd. Because it is a boarding fee and not payment for milk, it is not dependent upon your picking up your milk nor can it be adjusted if you should choose not to get milk for any reason. The agreed upon quantity of milk based on your ownership in the dairy herd will be made available to you each week by the farmer.
